Jackdaw

Modern Preservation.

The rugged hillsides of historic Mission Hills served as a natural counterbalance to the contemporary lines and flow of this 4,055 square foot three-story home. To preserve the site's city and bay views, we created a three-story cascade reminiscent of mid-century design in one of two homes we reverently call our “Revival Collection.”

Step construction integrates the home into the hillside, resulting in an overall natural feel and an increase in allowable interior square footage. Rooftop views are perfect for watching planes land over the Bay. One of the earliest developments for our company, Jackdaw still remains one of our favorite projects, serving as a constant reminder of the beauty found in simplicity.

EXTERIOR

The home has an 18 foot retractable wall that disappears into side pockets, opening onto expansive deck views and water features eliminating the border between inside and out. Preservation of the natural landscape around the home further integrates it into the environment. Large travertine tiles extend from the living room to the patio, resulting in a clean, sophisticated flow from the interior to the exterior. Inspired by famed local architect Homer Delawie and located next to one of his works, the Jackdaw home exhumes mid-century styles and trends in a unique and contemporary fashion.

INTERIOR

Beautiful travertine tiles line the floor, a stark contrast to the dark colored slabs surrounding the fireplace. Free-floating wooden stairs complete with glass bannisters provide access to the kitchen and living room while preserving the universal aesthetic of the home. Large sliding-glass doors maintain a great amount of natural light. Upstairs, the floors are hardwood to match the kitchen ceiling, giving the home a visually satisfying flow. Bathrooms retrofitted with glass sinks and wooden cabinets serve as finishing touches to a thoughtful design artfully crafted into existence.
