CROSS-CONTINENTal CHALLENGE
Located on a cliff side in Bantry Bay, an affluent suburb of Cape Town, South Africa, ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ—or Home George—is a single family residence for a young, extended Greek family.
George captures stunning views of the adjacent Lion’s Head mountain and the rocky shoreline below. Based on the unique hillside terrain, the home is set into the mountain with four extensive levels, including a secure entrance and parking area at the street level, down to a cantilevered pool at the lowest level.
When approaching the site, the focus is on the surrounding views of the ocean and terrain, rather than a building that interrupts the natural topography. Each level of the home opens to communal areas, with bedrooms and private elements pushed towards the hillside. An innovative post-and-beam structure is used in conjunction with concrete construction to create a modern, transformative take on traditional mid-century architecture. Expansive glass walls allow for visual continuity and an abundance of natural light while maintaining concrete construction to keep the spaces secure. Completed in December 2018, George adds a stunning impact to this Cape Town cliff side.
